Conversion of an old stone outbuilding into self-contained annexed accommodation on a tight budget.
Pivotal to the design solution in converting this single storey stone built former farm shed is the introduction of a strucutral cast concrete reinforced ring beam at wall plate level. This ring beam performs several roles greastly contributing to the cost effectivemenss and simplicity of the construction. The beam primarily acts as a wall plate over the old stone walls tieing them all together and provides a good sound base for the new roof to sprng off of. The new annexe is internally insulated with a low effective thermal mass so the interior can be warmed up relatively quickly for when guests arrive.
