Deveral Chapel conversion and extension

BRIEF

A listed building converted from an old chapel into a dwelling with a new entrance area and additional habitable space that opens out onto the garden. The new modern massing creates a simply formed extension to contrast with the former Methodist Chapel with a very light touch between the two forms to minimise any material effect to the historic fabric of the listed building. The new spaces have ample daylight and simple transitions from inside to out, blurring the boundaries.

DESIGN

A grade II Listed former Methodist Chapel converted into a dwelling with a contemporary garden room, set apart from the main Chapel building by a new entrance lobby linking the two, old and new. The new extension has a clean and simple form with a dark palette of materials to minimise its presence and to contrast it with the larger white rendered listed Chapel, clearly demarking the old from the new. The new entrance lobby lightly affixes to the old Chapel, a gentle touch respecting the historic fabric of the building.

'Grade II - Methodist chapel. Reputedly opened circa 1793-4, extended circa late C19. Rendered rubble and possibly cob. Grouted scantle slate roof at front (east) and asbestos slate at rear with brick chimney over the left-hand gable end and polygonal scantle slate roof with cast-iron ogee gutters over porch adjoining the right-hand gable end. Plan: Rectangular aisle-less plan chapel with entrance at the south (ritual west) end. Extended circa late C19 with a vestry at the north end and a porch at the south end. '
